Everyday leadership - Drew Dudley

Today I watched a very inspiring Ted Talk by Drew Dudley about everyday leadership. Drew starts off by asking the audience by a raise of hands "who believes that they are a leader?" Not many people raised their hands and Drew explained that most people now a days won't raise their hand because they do not want to seem cocky or arrogant. Drew then says "We have all changed someone’s life — usually without even realizing it." He believes that everyone one is a leader because of everyday acts of improving each other's lives.

Throughout the Ted Talk Drew tells his "lollipop moment" story about a time he did an everyday act to become a leader. At Drew's last day at college a girl are up to him and said "I remember the first time I met you" and proceeded to tell him the time she met him four years earlier. It was the girls first day at school with her parents and she was very nervous about going and wasn't sure if college was right for her. Drew worked for students fighting for cystic fibrosis and went through the line of students in registration handing out lollipops to spread awareness. The girl remembered his dumb hat he was wearing and as he came toward her, Drew looked her in the eye and turned to the boy next to her and said "give this beautiful girl a lollipop." Later on after college that same girl and the boy who handed her the lollipop got marry! Drew was even invited to the wedding because of what he did! The girl said Drew had made the biggest impact on her live and she will never forget it and he was the reason she decided to change her mind about school. Drew doesn't even remember this moment happening!

Drew goes on to end the video by saying everyone in their life has had or been apart of a "lollipop moment" and these small moments can have a huge impact on someones life whether we believe it or not. This video was real eye opener for me because I think Drew is right! Everyone has had a "lollipop moment" before and we just don't realize it. The smallest interactions we have with friends or strangers each day can mean the world to someone. I really encourage everyone one to watch this Ted Talk because it has redefined leadership for me.

Comments

  1. This is a fun video. A lot of leadership is about the small things you do everyday. People really want to be acknowledged by their leader. That was a tip I was given early on by a mentor - talk to everyone on your team everyday.

  2. I found the video very informative and gave me ideas of how to become a better leader through the small things. I also liked the lollipop part and how he made such a big impact on the girl.
