Great tips for making your job interview count- Anna Post

We will go through many interviews in our life. Some students now are currently going through interviews to get an internship for the summer. I thought this Ted talk by Anna Post fit well and we can always improve on our interview skills. Interviews are nerve-racking, especially your very first one, you don't know what to expect. Anna Post says " think of it like a one on one regular conversation." Anna throughout this video talks about six key way to help improve your interview skills and really make it count. First, Anna says to prepare. Prepare what you are going to say, learn about the company, and then repeat what you are going to say before you go to the interview, practice with a friend. Next, dress up, dress appropriately to visit. Don't be afraid to the call the office and ask what the dress code is like. Then, be on time. This is super important, don't be afraid to time it out and drive there before hand to see how long it takes you to get there. I typically like to get to places 15 minutes before it starts just incase anything happens. Next, work on your handshake. Make sure you are looking at them and give the person a nice firm handshake. No one likes a floppy handshake. Another key skill is cellphone use. Put it away right when you get to the interview. Give the person your full attention, show an interest and respect. Finally, after the interview is done, send a thank you note. A hand written note is perfect or an email works too. Saying thank you for their time can go a long way. Hopefully this helps!

  1. I've heard the thank you note thing a lot from senior execs. If someone takes the time to meet with you, send a thank you note. Hand written ones are nice and show some style, but an e-mail will do the job.

  2. In my opinion, handshakes are always undervalued while introducing yourself to another individual, especially a potential future boss. A handshake is the first interaction between individuals and can make or break a first impression. Presenting yourself in a positive way is the first step in a successful relationship with a boss in my opinion.
